2018 OPENING NIGHT + PROGRAM LAUNCH!
AFW + NFSA #35: MAYA DEREN
Thursday 22nd February, 8.30pm @ Arena Project Space, 2 Kerr St Fitzroy. $7 entry.
The opening night of Artist Film Workshop’s annual screening program for 2018 presents the work of Maya Deren; dancer, choreographer, poet, writer, photographer & pioneer of American avant-garde cinema.
Deren’s films are difficult to categorise; she rejected an alignment with surrealism and refused classification alongside structuralist filmmaking. Moreover, she shunned the institutional regulation of American cinema, independently distributing her work on self-organised tours around North America and Cuba, while lecturing on her work, film and art. Like other pioneers of the cinema – Sergei Eisenstein, for example, or Jean-Luc Godard - she was also critical theorist of her own work, publishing influential writings on her practice.
Exploring the human body, dance, ritual and transcendence - plus a healthy dose of poetic psychodrama - this program of shorts encompasses Deren’s influential filmography. Don’t miss this rare chance to see these films on 16mm!
