Artist Film Workshop

Artist Film Workshop is an artist-run group in Melbourne, convened by Nanolab, whose mission is to provide access to film knowledge and resources for artists.

To this end AFW holds regular open screenings at TAPE Project Space in Melbourne; and organises at-cost practical workshops for visual and multi-practice artists interested in or already working with film.

Future projects include the establishment of an open access film lab for artists in metropolitan Melbourne.

Current AFW organisers are Dianna Barrie and Richard Tuohy. Interested artists are welcome to join the collective and/ or attend AFW events. We post event information here on our website (check the Open screenings and Workshops links above); on our Facebook page; and via our mailing list.

Nanolab

Nanolab is a hand processing lab for super 8 black and white and colour reversal film; indeed nano is the only lab for reversal super 8 processing in the southern hemisphere. Nano was born in response to the looming end of Kodachrome 40 in 2005 and the need to find a lab to process the new Ektachrome super 8 stocks.

The spirit behind nano is to make super 8 a possible option for artists and the general community in Australasia. The lab is run by two experimental film artists: Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie. In addition to super 8 processing on a commercial basis, nano has facilities for 16mm reversal, ecnII and ecp processing, JK optical printer, Takita 16mm contact printer, as well as 16mm editing and telecine facilities. The lab has 35mm shooting, processing, editing and projecting equipment.

Nanolab’s projects include:

• a residency program for artists to stay and work in the lab in Daylesford, a small town in the hills about an hour and half outside Melbourne, Australia; and
• convening Artist Film Workshop, an artist-run group in Melbourne whose mission is to provide access to film knowledge and resources for artists.
