THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD IS A VERY DEAD END - In gefahr und größter Not bringt der Mittelweg den Tod
1974
dir. Alexander Kluge and Edgar Reitz
90min - 16mm Print
23 SEPTEMBER - 8 pm
Directed by Alexander Kluge (Yesterdays Girl) and Edgar Reitz (Heimat) the film centres on two fictional characters, a woman who steals from her many lovers whenever possible and an East German spy wander through the urban landscape witnessing 'real-life' events - a collage covering a ten day period in Frankfurt in February 1974. Modelled on the Wochenschav (weekly newsreel), further deconstructing the fragmented form by eschewing the traditional voice-over commentary, the film is a series of ironic aphorisms resembling the writings of the Frankfurt School, a radical critique of contemporary mass culture that poses questions not solutions.
A winner at the German Film Prize, the film is an early collaboration between two defining figures of New German Cinema, who recast West Germany in a time of political and social ferment.
